The BC government has ordered BC Hydro to install smart meters on all houses and businesses in BC. A successful Initiative to repeal that mandate will force the government to choose between respecting the wishes of the people, or suffering the consequences at the next election.
Overwhelming support will be needed to make this non-partisan Initiative successful – demonstrating that we have overwhelming support is the key to the StopSmartMeters.ca plan. Organising British Columbians to demonstrate their opposition to smart meters in BC will be made possible by the StopSmartMeters.ca website. Bringing people to that website is the task of people and other groups who have been fighting the smart meter for many months.
On the website, a person wanting to prevent or remove a smart meter will be able to pre-register their intention to sign the Petition. The official Initiative Petition to rid BC of smart meters will be called by the executive of StopSmartMeters.ca at the moment when success is assured, and not until. This could take 12 – 24 months. Any persons wishing to sign the Official Petition once it is launched, can indicate their intention now by adding their name and contact information to our Pre-Registration database.
The information in this secure database will enable the executive of StopSmartMeters.ca to record the number of people who have pledged to sign the petition, and allow us to poll our anti-smart meter supporters if a change in tactics is called for, due to any government moves to derail the Initiative. This will allow us to show the level of support for the Petition as it grows, and to remain flexible in our responses and actions.
Public awareness of smart meter concerns and issues for British Columbians will be raised to a high level by an advertising and education campaign in collaboration with other organizations such as Citizens for Safe Technology and the Coalition to Stop Smart Meters.
A well-supported Initiative, timed for the run-up to the 2013 provincial election, will promise defeat for a highhanded government that ignores the people on the smart meter issue. The Initiative will aim to repeal the section of the Clean Energy Act that requires BC Hydro to install smart meters [including the removal of installed smart meters and compensation for damages caused].
Obviously the task of organising more than a million BC voters will incur substantial cost for things like advertising, education, lawyers’ fees, printing and numerous other expenses. Consequently, we are asking that each person donate a minimum of $20 in order to give the Petition a good chance of success. The organised power of many $20 donations can achieve what no British Columbian can do alone. Those people already prepared to donate $20 immediately will kick off an awareness campaign that will bring in more and more donations.
The money collected will ONLY be used to fight the Smart Meter program. Any funds left over once the campaign is complete will be donated to an appropriate and worthwhile cause. Stopsmartmeters.ca is a non-profit Society and the directors and members of the Society will NOT receive ANY money for their work.
We are the 99%. Please join us in stopping the smart meters. Register now.
