PRESS RELEASE: StopSmartMeters.ca Society;
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Vancouver BC, Canada, 2013-08-08.

….and Now the Chicken in the Barnyard!

StopSmartMeters.ca Society is a non-profit Society in the province of British Columbia that is working to restore democratic process on the issue of the BC Hydro smart metering program.

On July 18th, British Columbia’s Minister of Energy Bill Bennett made a news release in which he revealed details of his government’s earlier July 11th proposed opt-out from the BC Hydro smart metering program. In a press release on July 15th, StopSmartMeters president, James G. Smith called the proposed opt out “more lipstick on the same pig.”

StopSmartMeters.ca Society is now calling Mr. Bennett a “big chicken” and maintains that Mr. Bennett’s press release resolved nothing. According to StopSmartMeters.ca Society, a direct request has been made to Mr. Bennett’s office for a meeting to discuss the opt-out that was announced by Mr. Bennett on July 18th.

According to StopSmartMeters.ca president James Smith, “We have not even received the courtesy of a response. This is what our governments at all levels are becoming. First they fail completely to include the public in dialogue, and then even when the public goes to the extreme of forming legal Societies for the purpose of enhanced credibility, they still choose to ignore us. Is this democracy? We are forced to pursue action in the courts when the whole matter could be settled through some dialogue.”

StopSmartMeters.ca Society is asking, “What is he afraid of? This government holds itself up as the purveyor of free enterprise and yet they refuse to let the smart metering program stand or fail on its own merit. If the smart metering program is all that they claim it to be, then give us a universal no cost opt-out and let the public decide. If the program is all they claim it to be, it will succeed and there will be no mass exodus away from the meters. If there is, that is where we can work together to create a staged plan of retreat that will mitigate the impact on BC Hydro.” StopSmartMeters.ca Society challenges Mr. Bennett to do the right thing and to respond to their request for a meeting.

More Lipstick on the Same Pig!

StopSmartMeters.ca Society is a non-profit Society in the province of British Columbia that is working to restore democratic process on the issue of the BC Hydro smart metering program.

On July 11th British Columbia’s new Minister of Energy Bill Bennett announced a “concession” to what he claims to more than 60,000 residents who remain unwilling to allow the government to install smart meters on their property. Mr. Bennett announced that altered smart meters, with the transmitters turned off, will be made available but with a fee attached. Is this really a concession?

StopSmartMeters.ca president, James Smith says, “This is no concession. That becomes clear when you start to ask a few questions. Why is this offer being extended only to the 60,000 so called “hold outs” who had the strength and conviction to stand their ground, and not to the entire public? Is that fair? What about the thousands of people who had these forced upon them against their will? Can they now exercise an opt-out? What happens when one or any of the 60,000 relocates from their premises—can they carry the option with them? Apparently not! How do we know that the transmitters have been turned off and will remain off? Why is there a fee attached to this? When was the last time anyone paid someone NOT to do something or to NOT take a service? The idea of paying to keep your home and family safe is the equivalent of extortion. Why not charge those that want a meter an opt-in fee and leave it to the public to decide if having one is an economic benefit or not? Why has Mr Bennett not agreed to amend Section 17 of the Clean Energy Act to reflect the intent of his concession? Why is he afraid to bring true democratic process into this issue?”

Mr Smith goes on to say, “The government deliberately bypassed democratic process on this issue, just as they did with regard to the HST, and like the HST issue they are unwilling to admit that they made a mistake. StopSmartMeters.ca Society encourages the 60,000 “hold outs” to continue to stand your ground on this issue and to refuse payment of any fees for the purposes of keeping your non-smart meter. Until such time that the government agrees to hold proper democratic process on this issue and to amend the Clean Energy Act to reflect the will of the public as a whole, we can only view Mr Bennett’s concession as a longer-term ploy to ultimately get their way and install a wireless smart meter on every home.”

StopSmartMeters.ca Society’s Social Media Campaign Goes Live Today

StopSmartMeters.ca Society is a non-profit Society in the province of British Columbia that is working to restore democratic process on the issue of the BC Hydro smart metering program. In a previous press release StopSmartMeters announced its intention to launch a Social Media Campaign in order to garner support for an Initiative Petition to do just that.

StopSmartMeters.ca president, James Smith, states:“We have not even received the courtesy of a response. This is what our governments at all levels are becoming. First they fail completely to include the public in dialogue, and then even when the public goes to the extreme of forming legal Societies for the purpose of enhanced credibility, they still choose to ignore us.
